I must admit it, the makeup and beauty world can be a little overwhelming sometimes, especially when you are a beginner. So many products to choose from, so many formulas of the same products, so many colors. Looking back at days when I wasn’t into makeup as much as I am now, my makeup routine was so simple – some BB cream, kohl and a lipstick. I couldn’t even imagine at that time that I would need 3 different kinds of foundation – one for a matte look, one for a dewy look, one for everyday. I used to have just one facial spray – a rose water to keep my skin hydrated and glowy. Now I have a hydrating toner, a skin calming toner, a setting spray and what not.
How to Start A Makeup Routine for Beginners
A lot of you, just starting to build your collection of makeup, ask me what are the essential items you should have in your vanity. You don’t need so many products, trust me. You maybe need just about five or six products to start a makeup routine.
- Tinted Moisturizer or a BB Cream
Finding the perfect foundation for your skin type and with the finish you want can take a while. I have just recently found my holy grail foundation after trying out so many. So when you are starting out, just go for a light tinted moisturizer or a BB cream. These do not come in a variety of shades, pick a shade closest to your skin tone. Check out MAC Prep and Prime BB cream or Lakme Complexion Care Face Cream.
- Compact Powder
As a beginner, all you need to set your makeup and keep your skin from looking shiny is a compact powder. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is super affordable and a much talked about powder that you can try. My personal favorite is MAC Mineralize Skinfinish, though it doesn’t do much in keeping the oil levels under bay, it just blurs out your skin.
A lot of times when I cant be bothered to put a full face of makeup, I just apply some concealer and a compact. Pick up a concealer with a wand or a doe foot applicator. The Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Flawless Concealer is a long wear concealer and gives an flawless coverage. A cheaper alternative and a very close dupe for the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer is the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer.
Pick out your formula – creamy or powder. I personally, if I was going to start all over again, would pick up a powder formula. I love the MAC Blushes, but they have a lot of different finishes – satin, frost, mineralize etc. Clinique Cheek Pops would be a good choice. They have a good shade selection and their formula is really soft and buttery.
I remember, my first lipstick was a MAC lipstick. There is something about MAC Lipsticks that always draw me towards it even now. They have a ton of shades and formulas. Go in for a creamy finish as matte lipsticks need a bit of patience as well as skill to apply. Great everyday shades are Cosmo, Mehr, Twig, Taupe.
Whether you are a beginner or a pro, you need a mascara in your vanity. Do not spend a fortune on mascaras, they eventually dry out quickly. My absolute favourite is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara.
- Brow Pencils
Well, you don’t really need this when youre starting out. But over the course of time I have realized that brows really frame your face and should not be neglected. I love the Soap n Glory Archery 2-in-1 Brow Filling Pencil, but its not available in India. NYX Micro Brow Pencil looks very similar.
