While I love to invest in good skin care products and I love my usual Kiehl’s, The Body Shop, Forest Essentials, Sarah Chapman, etc, I have also found some amazing products for the face and body from the local beauty market or rather the “drugstore”. Not only are these affordable, but they are also very effective and can be easily found at your local supermarkets or chemists. For me, most of these products were a new and unexpected discovery as I used them either when I was visiting my mother’s house or when I had ran out of my usual skin care stuff and had to make do with what was available. And I was pleasantly surprised.
- Garnier Pure Active High Foaming Face Wash
Enriched with neem and tulsi, this face wash from Garnier was launched in the Indian market last year. This face wash also contains Salicylic acid which helps in combating acne. A small pea sized is enough for the entire face. True to its name, it foams up quite well leaving the skin squeaky clean and refreshed without drying it out. You know the product is working when your skin looks “nice” once you use it after a long and hot day out in Delhi. The smell is fresh and light and nothing too over-powering. My sister, who has acne prone skin, used this for 3 months and during that period her skin was totally clear. All in all it’s a simple no-fuss face wash which does the job of cleaning the face and keeping it clear effectively. A great product at a very affordable price.
- Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50+
Say goodbye to skin darkening, sun burns and age spots with this sunscreen from Neutrogena, which can give a lot of high end sunblocks a run for their money. The importance of sunscreen in every girl’s skin care routine cannot be ignored, and the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50+ is perfect for all skin types. Although it is little creamy in texture, it does not feel too heavy or oily on the skin. Nor does it leave a white cast on the face like some others do. It can also be used as a base under your foundation during the day. Sometimes I use it as a daytime moisturizer too. I have been using this since 4 years and can safely say that it is a holy grail product for me.
- Dove Deeply Nourishing Body Wash
When it comes to bath and body care, I think Dove is one of the best brands that is out there. Before turning into a body wash Nazi, the Dove soap bar was the only soap that I used. I have to say that I am very pleased with the results of this product. It cleans your skin while moisturizing. The consistency of the body wash is very thick and creamy and feels luxurious. The fragrance is quite mild, much like most of Dove products. It lathers very well and you can feel it hydrating your skin deeply with the very first wash. Skin is so soft and smooth post bath that you can afford to give body lotion a miss.
- Nivea Essential Care Lip Balm
I discovered this lip balm recently and was left impressed by how effective it was in keeping my lips soft and moisturized. Although I don’t really like its packaging much, but this minor gripe can be ignored considering how affordable it is. It is a basic lip balm but an absolute unsung beauty hero in my opinion. My lips are softer and smoother when I use this continuously. I can notice a real difference in how soft my lips are after using this compared to the others that I have used. It isn’t “waxy” like some lip balms out there. The fragrance is very mild and it doesn’t have any tint or color to it.
- Neutrogena Fine Fairness Brightening Serum
Ignoring the ignominious “whitening” claims, this serum is a whole lot of goodness filled in one bottle. It is a light weight serum, which instantly adds moisture and translucence to the skin. I love how soft and supple my skin feels after I apply this. This serum also makes for a great primer before makeup; imparting a dewy glow to the skin. Over continued use, it has improved my skin’s texture and the dark spots on my face have also started fading away due to the vitamin C present in its ingredient list. Major thumbs up to this product.
- Himalaya Herbals Purifying Neem Pack
Enriched with the natural goodness of neem, turmeric and multani mitti (fullers earth), this face mask does everything it claims to do; deep cleansing and removal of acne causing bacteria. It smells of a typical herbal concoction. Some people might find it too strong. But 5 to 10 minutes of this face pack on your skin and you can definitely see the difference it makes. I always reach out for this face pack after a very heavy make up day or when I feel that I need something extra to clean and even out my skin- usually after a week of ignored skin care or after a weekend binge of fries and doughnuts. It clears out all the dirt, impurities and oiliness from the skin without leaving skin extra dry. For many people out there, including my sister who as I mentioned has acne prone skin, it has does wonders on curing acne but the results vary from person to person.
